• service retirement benefits, which provide income to a member after the member retires;
• disability retirement benefits, which provides income to a member if a member becomes disabled (as defined by MLRS law) while in service and before the member retires; and
• death benefits, which are paid to a member's designated beneficiary(ies) (or family or estate, if the member has not designated one or more beneficiaries) if the member dies before he/she retires. (A designated beneficiary is a person the member has named to receive a benefit.)
